The Hepatitis E disease is caused by the Hepatitis E virus. The disease is one of the five major forms of a series of Hepatitis diseases. The virus associated with Hepatitis E is a single strand virus, which is also known as an RNA virus. Unlike the transmission route followed by other Hepatitis disease, Hepatitis E is transmitted orally.
The disease is a fairly new one compared to the other Hepatitis diseases. It was first experienced during the 1950’s when the disease had an outbreak in the capital city of New Delhi, in India.
Occurrence of Hepatitis E
Hepatitis E is not usually fatal. Its fatality rate is very low, as low as 2%. The disease has been prominent among the younger generation, especially those who are between 15- 40 years of age. Some children seem to have been effected by Hepatitis E, but the affects of the disease in children is not to a very high extent.
How harmful is Hepatitis E?
Hepatitis E does not require a treatment of high intensity. Normally, the person who is infected will recover on their own after a certain time. Certain treatments can be administered to the infected person, to make him recover from any weaknesses once the disease has cleared.
When Hepatitis E infects a person the person can remain infected for months. Though, the person can recover on his own, during the tenure of his illness, the infected body will experience weakness and a lack of willingness to perform normal daily chores.
The effects of Hepatitis E are quite severe in pregnant women. A pregnant woman in some cases can develop fulminant Hepatic failure.
Prevention of Hepatitis E
A recent development of a vaccine for controlling Hepatitis E has been developed by the medical scientists. Still, the vaccination is not very prevalent. Though, the Hepatitis E vaccine is safe, certain tests needs to be completed before the vaccine can be put to full use.
The best way to prevent Hepatitis E is by following the process of sanitation. Keep your drinking water clean, follow the rules of keeping your food clean and also keeping your neighbourhood clean, which will ensure a clean environment and clean surroundings and will result in preventing Hepatitis E virus spreading through your neighbourhood. Since Hepatitis E spreads through oral transmission, you are advised to make sure that your food and drink and utensils are clean and safe.
